Dyslexia

Build reading, spelling, and confidence.

Hear it.  See it.  Read it.

What is Dyslexia

Dyslexia is a language-based learning difference that affects how the brain processes sounds, not how the eyes see. It occurs when the brain struggles to connect the sounds we hear with the letters that represent them. Reading is not automatic—it builds on spoken language. When these sound-to-letter connections are weak, reading and spelling become difficult.

The most common sign of dyslexia is trouble with spelling, often spelling words phonetically. Other early signs include speech delays, sometimes noticeable by 18 to 24 months, and ongoing difficulty linking sounds to letters, which affects reading fluency.

Effective tutoring strengthens the brain’s ability to recognize and manipulate sounds. Students learn to hear and connect sounds more accurately, building the foundation for reading and spelling. Simply asking a student with dyslexia to “sound out” a word doesn’t work initially; these skills must be developed first. With targeted support, reading and writing become more manageable.

Our Program

At Tutoring Excellence, we use the Barton Reading and Spelling System, a scientifically based program approved by the Colorado Department of Education. Grounded in the Orton-Gillingham approach, Barton is a structured literacy program that is multi-sensory, direct, explicit, sequential, and intensive. Before enrolling in our Dyslexia Reading program, students must have a formal diagnosis or have been screened for dyslexia.

What It Teaches

The program teaches all aspects of language—including reading, spelling, fluency, comprehension, and grammar—in a systematic, multi-sensory way, similar to learning a foreign language.

Time Commitment

The Barton Reading and Spelling System is a proven, structured program that typically takes two to four years to complete. Students attend in person or online for two 1-hour sessions per week.
